Education Access is pleased to offer this 5 hour SASC approved collaborate scheme in order to support you with keeping abreast of current research contributing towards your general professional skill and knowledge. You will be an active contributor to the sessions. It will strike a balance between theory and practical application, offering a safe space where questions can be answered, experiences shared, and knowledge deepened.
The course will provide content in line with Table 3 (pages 15-16) of SASC Guidance on Assessment of Mathematics Difficulties and Dyscalculia 2025, with a focus on the rationale behind some of the areas for assessment, including:
- The impact that domain-specific and domain-general difficulties may have upon learning and performance in mathematics and training in and experience of applying knowledge to the assessment of mathematics (1b)
- Risk and resilience factors in learning mathematics (1b)
- Training, knowledge and experience of holistic SpLD Assessment (3), in particular:
- Training in and experience of, applying this knowledge to the assessment of mathematics.
Who is it for?
- Those who have APC with a maths focus who wish to update and refresh knowledge in line with new SASC guidance.
- Those with APC with a focus on literacy, who are considering moving into assessing for maths difficulties.
- Those with a Level 7 SpLD qualification.
Prerequisites
You need to meet the SASC educational and experience requirements for APC submission https://www.sasc.org.uk/assessment-practising-certificate/ or have a level 7 SpLD qualification.
Learning outcomes
- To evaluate and reflect on own report writing.
- To continue to build the requisite knowledge to tackle assessments in maths.
- To develop a theoretical understanding behind specific and general areas to be assessed.
- To apply practically the theoretical knowledge to the assessment of mathematics difficulties, and resulting report-writing.
This 5 hour SASC approved course will allow ongoing professional development and cover the following:
- Core 1 (C1) principles of psychometrics, statistics, assessment and underlying theory
- Core 2 (C2) SpLD testing methods, interpretation and test materials
- Supplementary 1 (S1) changes in regulations and legislation relating to SpLDs
- Supplementary 2 (S2) developments in SpLD research
- Supplementary 3 (S3) approaches to teaching and support for SpLD
Programme
Within a supportive and collaborative environment, this activity will keep you abreast of current research contributing towards your general professional skill and knowledge. You will be an active contributor to the sessions. It will strike a balance between theory and practical application, offering a safe space where questions can be answered, experiences shared, and knowledge deepened.
Please note it is not a level 7 course, but it will contribute towards the experience and training needed to apply knowledge to the assessment of mathematics.
You will maintain a log of your CPD activity which provides evidence of the study you have undertaken in each area. Realistically, the preparation involved before the sessions will be no less than 10 supplementary hours in total over the 10 week duration of the programme. Your CPD logs will include reflective analysis of CPD undertaken – considering what has been learned and how the material might impact on Practice, to be discussed at the end of each session.
· What have you learned?
· What would you change as a result?
· How will it impact on your practice?
The 5 sessions will be:
- Session 1: Defining dyscalculia and environmental factors
- Session 2: Focus on inhibitory control and executive function and co-occurrence with ADHD
- Session 3: Number lines
- Session 4: Language
- Session 5: Visual spatial skills
Every two weeks, there will be structured 60-minute TEAMS call (in groups of 6). Rebecca will present the introductory material for approximately 30 minutes and then we will all discuss the topics raised. You will have prepared ideas, resources and questions to bring to the session. The intention is to build confidence, provide peer support and validation and a safe space to discuss challenges and successes.
Small group mentoring offers a collaborative space where questions can be asked and answered, experiences shared, and knowledge deepened. The balance between theory and practical application has been carefully considered so that assessors can gain confidence in the assessment and provision of support to individuals with dyscalculia or SpLD in maths.
Expectations of delegates
Your will be expected to:
- Commit to attending all 5 sessions.
- Commit to completing the preparatory tasks.
- Actively engage with the sessions, bringing your own ideas and resources to discuss.
You will need access to email, and an internet connection suitable for video-calling.
